Sri Lankan cricketer Dinesh Chandimal has signed for the Bhairahawa Gladiators under the captaincy of Sharad Vesavakar under the Everest Premier League (EPL).
Chandimal is the fifth cricketer from Test nation to play in the EPL to be held from September 26 to 30. Earlier, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, and Danish Aziz, and West Indies’ Carlos Brathwaite have been confirmed to play in the league. Afridi will play for Kathmandu Kings XI and Aziz for Chitwan Tigers. Malik and Brathwaite have not been named to the squad.
Chandimal, 31, former captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team, made his debut for Sri Lanka in 2010. He has played 62 Tests, 149 ODIs, and 57 T20Is for the country. Playing the role of wicketkeeper-batsman, Chandima has scored 4,158 runs with 11 centuries and 20 fifties in Tests, 3,698 runs with 4 centuries and 23 fifties in ODIs, and 868 runs with 5 half-centuries in T20s.
Chandimal was a member of the Sri Lankan team when Sri Lanka won the T20 World Cup in 2014 and was runner-up in 2012. At the age of 23, Chandimal became the youngest player to captain Sri Lanka in ODIs in 2013. He also captained the team in the 2014 T20 World Cup but was replaced by Lasith Malinga after being banned for one game due to a late over rate. He captained Sri Lanka in 12 ODIs, 26 T20 Internationals, and 19 Tests.
Bhairahawa Gladiators under the captaincy of Sharad Vesavakar have Nepali players like Arif Sheikh, Pradip Airy, Bhuvan Karki, Dipesh Shrestha, Rohit Poudel, Avinash Bohra, Kushal Malla, Krishna Karki, Harishankar Shah, Himanshu Dutta, and Bikash Agri. Former Nepali national team coach Pubudu Dasanayake is the coach of the team. The team has yet to announce the names of the other two foreign players.
Bhairahawa is the runner-up team in the previous two editions of EPL 2017 and 2018. It lost to Biratnagar Warriors in 2017 final and lost to Lalitpur Patriots in 2018.
