Redmi 9 Activ in Nepal: A budget phone with modest features and a confident battery life claim

Redmi 9 Activ is a budget-range smartphone from Xiaomi that has recently been available in Nepal.

Redmi 9 Activ is one of the many smartphones of the Redmi 9 series. This phone holds similar specifications as the Redmi 9C which was launched back in September 2021. The phone has been introduced together with Redmi 9A sport. Though the phone was released months ago in India, it has only made its way to Nepal now.

Most impressively, the company has assured the buyers that Redmi 9 Activ’s battery will perform as powerfully as it is now for over three years. Here are the details of the phone.

With a glass front, Redmi 9 Activ has a plastic back and a plastic frame build. It has a waterdrop notch on the front that houses a camera. The plastic back of the phone has a textured design and prevents fingerprints to stay on the phone. There is also a fingerprint sensor on the back as well as a rectangular-shaped camera panel. The phone weighs around 194 grams and is 9mm in thickness.

The phone comes with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 720*1,600 pixels and has an 81% screen-to-body ratio. The display on the phone has a typical brightness of 400 nits and has a water-repellent coating. There is also an AI face unlock feature on the phone.

Redmi 9 Activ has a dual camera on the rear end and a single selfie shooter on the front. The main 13MP camera on the back is housed together with a 2MP depth sensor and an LED flash. On the front is a 5MP selfie camera that has an aperture of f/2.2. The cameras can record videos in 1080p@ 30fps. The cameras on the phone have features like phase detection autofocus (PDAF), HDR, AI portrait mode, face recognition, AI Beautify 5.0 and AI scene detection.

Redmi 9 Activ runs on MIUI 12 based on Android 10. The phone is powered by MediaTek Helio G35 (12nm) chipset while the graphics of the phone are handled by PowerVR GE8320. The Helio G35  chipset is optimized for HyperEngine performance and the octa-core processor on the phone enables fast and smooth performance.

The phone is backed up by a 5,000mAh non-removable Li-Po battery which can be charged with a 10W charger that comes inside the box of the phone. This power should be able to provide the user 164 hours of music, 37 hours of VolTe call, 13.5 hours of gaming and 30 hours of video playback time. The company has a bold claim that the users can use this phone for 3.2 years daily without any notable degradation in the battery life. It also claims the battery longevity has been increased by 25% compared to the market standard.

Redmi 9 Activ supports dual nano sims and dual-band wifi. The phone has Bluetooth 5.0 and micro USB 2.0 for further connectivity. The phone also supports FM radio and has a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio connectivity.

There is only a single variant of the phone in Nepal. With 4GB of RAM, the phone has an internal storage of 64GB. The storage of the phone can be expanded with a microSD card, for which the phone has a dedicated slot.
